AMSS (UK): THE ORGANISATION

In December 1996 a seminar was held at the Oxford Academy for Advanced Studies on Muslim graduate studies in the West. Attended by many Muslim academics and scholars in the humanities, it was to be a catalyst for the formation of a new organisation, the Association of Muslim Social Scientists, dedicated to the promotion of the Islamic position in various academic disciplines. The Association of Muslim Social Scientists (UK) is an association based in London and committed to the development of Islamic thought through research, scholarship and publications. AMSS (UK) aims to keep Muslim scholars informed about current conceptual, methodological and analytical developments and promote greater interdisciplinary co-operation, in an effort towards generating informed, critical and creative Islamic alternatives and opinions on topical and emerging issues of academic relevance to Muslims.

AMSS (UK): MISSION STATEMENT

  • It promotes the development of Islamic methodologies for the social sciences through a proper application of Revelation and human knowledge.
  • It encourages Muslim social scientists and academics in the UK to work together and to debate and develop an Islamic view point on their particular academic discipline, and to participate at the cutting-edge of discourse as producers of human knowledge rather than simply as consumers, or at best, Islamic filters of knowledge.
  • It promotes among Muslim social scientists a spirit of cooperation, understanding and tolerance to generate and advance scholarly Islamic thought through critical and scientific inquiry.
  • It promotes and initiates research projects that focus on Islamic alternatives to contemporary problems.
  • It holds exhibitions, meetings, seminars, lectures, conferences and courses either independently or in association with similar organisations abroad.
  • It disseminates such thought in the form of periodicals, magazines, books, leaflets and other documents, films or video and audio tapes.
  • It encourages and supports the development and implementation of curricula for Islamic schools and educational institutions.
